Luxury Yangtze river cruises came about in the late 1970’s, when China emerged from 10 years of chaos known as the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). For almost three decades, Yangtze river cruise enjoyed spectacular growth, right up to when the Three Gorges Dam was completed in 2006.

Significance of Yangtze River

At 6,380km the Yangtze is the longest river in China. It is also the third longest in the world after the Nile and the Amazon. Like the Yellow River, it is considered a cradle of the Chinese civilization. Rising in the Tanggula Mountains in west-central China, the Yangtze River flows southeast before turning northeast and then generally east across south-central and east-central China to the East China Sea near Shanghai. It is known as Jinsha River in its upper course and Changjiang (long river) in the lower reaches. Chief tributaries include the Yalong, Min, Jialing, Han, and Wu rivers. Among the mega-urban centres along the Yangtze are Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing. The lower Yangtze basin is the birthplace of rice cultivation and one of the most strategic granaries of China.

China River Cruise with Laurus Travel

Due to popular demand, many of our China tour packages include a 3 or 4 day river cruise on the Yangtze, going upstream or downstream. Cruising downstream used to be much faster than going downstream. But since the completion of the Yangtze River dams near Yichang, the difference has become insignificant. The scenery certainly is the certainly same going in either direction.
